History
The beginnings of the AASR in its present form are
detectable in 18th century France. The rite works today
on the basis of two constitutions, dated from 1762 and
1786.
The first Supreme Council was set up in 1801 in
Charleston, South Carolina. The initial development of
the rite was slow. This changed in 1859, when the
American Albert Pike was appointed Grand Commander of
the Supreme Council of the Southern Jurisdiction. The
rite's subsequent rapid ascent around the world is
largely his merit.
In Switzerland the first AASR entity was the Chapter
"La Prudence" created in Geneva on 31 January 1802. The
Supreme Council of Switzerland constituted itself in
Lausanne in 1873.
The AASR of Switzerland organised worldwide
international conferences of Supreme Councils in 1875,
1922 and 1995 as well as several gathering of European
Grand Commanders.
The Supreme Councils are autonomous and act
independently within their countries. However they
engage in fraternal exchanges in order to promote mutual
understanding and to maintain liberty and peace.
